History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a public service organization founded by 22 collegiate women on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913. The organization’s goal is to provide public service, promote academic excellence, and support those in need. These goals are realized through the Sorority’s major program areas: educational development, political awareness and involvement, physical and mental health, economic development, and international awareness and involvement.

The Knightdale-Wake Forest Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was chartered on May 11, 1996. The Chapter which started with twelve charter members has grown to over 200 women who render public and community service in Northeast Wake County, primarily in Knightdale, Wake Forest, Wendell, Rolesville, and Zebulon.

The Jabberwock is distinctive to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Started in 1925 by Sorority member Marion Conover, Jabberwock is a nod to Lewis Carroll’s classic “Alice in Wonderland.” The character Jabberwock, summoned all the creatures in the kingdom to perform a gala event. Delta Sigma Theta’s Jabberwock over the years has included dances and skits. It has evolved into a major fundraiser for scholarships and public service programs. It is indeed a gala event where these young ladies show off their talents and are presented to society.
